Most visitors arrive to the Upper Lachlan via road with the Shire centrally located on many regional routes and easily accessible from Canberra, Goulburn, Bathurst, Boorowa and Oberon. The main southern road corridor, the Hume Highway, runs through the Shire and the Federal Highway to Canberra also runs adjacent to the southern section. Both provide excellent access to the region for visitors from all directions. Make sure you check out the quaint villages along the routes such as Gunning and Collector that offer excellent rest and refreshment options.
The Shire itself is crisscrossed by sealed regional main roads making exploration easy for all types of vehicles. Most recently, the iconic “Bathurst Road” (MR54) which bisects the Shire running from Goulburn to Bathurst/Orange through Crookwell was fully sealed and provides a scenic and historic drive through the Southern Tablelands. Likewise, the Tablelands Way runs from Goulburn to Oberon through Taralga and offers magnificent views of the western side of the Blue Mountains.
For all information regarding local road conditions please call the Crookwell Visitor Information Centre on (02) 4832 1988.
Crookwell Airstrip is located 6km south of Crookwell township and can be used by private operators to access the surrounding district. There is no public transport from the airstrip therefore travellers need to organise their own ground transport.
Goulburn Airport is located 8km south of Goulburn CBD and is capable of taking larger aircraft including night landings. After landing at Goulburn travellers can use public or private ground transport options to explore the wider region.
The most popular way to explore the Canberra Region using air transport, for both domestic and international travellers, is to fly into Canberra Airport and then hire a car or use public transport to explore the Southern Tablelands including the Upper Lachlan region.
Goulburn Transfers and Tours operate an airport transfer service to and from Canberra and Sydney Airports and other locations on request. For bookings please call 0484 645 320.
The Upper Lachlan Shire can be accessed via rail with stations at Goulburn and Gunning. If arriving in Goulburn, travellers can catch the PBC Crookwell Bus Service that runs between Goulburn and Crookwell excluding weekends and public holidays.
